Seitz Versus Gendreau "S/T" LP
Seitz Versus Gendreau is a collaborative experiment in using concrete music compositional strategies.
These pieces were composed with created and found sound captured in San Francisco.

Chorus After Rains: A strategy where we each use the same raw sound clips with different results. The two pieces are then melded to create one piece of music, the different modules becoming inseparable from each other.

Things Lost That Will Never Be Found: A composition with live instruments, moving from a toy piano to various invented motor instruments; a piece that transitions from melody to noise.

Trains Will Not Stop: Another Grand Surface Noise opera (Nr. 9), using the various sounds from records, composed by Gendreau and re-mixed by Seitz using accelerometer recordings collected in San Francisco during 2005.

SEITZ, based in Oakland, California and formerly a member of Taxodiaceae, makes a rare foray into recording. Seitz is fascinated by the re-contextualization of ephemeral sound such as- streams from radio, lost and forgotten records, tangents of passing conversation, fragmented voicemails, pieces of cassettes sound, field recordings by amateurs, tv movie themes, and random and despised podcasts- and the breakdown of the music bubble that surrounds most contemporary music consumers. Seitz envisions a world where listeners actually listen and no music is fetishized.

GENDREAU has composed and performed solo, as well as in several group configurations since 1979. His former group Crawling With Tarts (1983-1998) used ideas revolving around elementalism and pre-language states. Gendreau has elaborated on these ideas while adding concepts based on his studies in physics, philosophies attending to temporal and environmental persistence, applications of parataxis, and experiments with small motors and turntable mechanisms. His performances have involved sounds from one-off transcription discs cast by others in the middle of the last century, and those cut in his studio using a decrepit lathe. More recently, Gendreau has sought to extend these later studies, and to use buildings as a speaker. He records the infrasonic vibrations of the performance space and in the concert, he uses the structure's resonances as an additional instrument in his site-specific compositions. These practices are based in part on his current work as an acoustician, working primarily on low-vibration and noise design for buildings.

Released in a limited edition of 90 copies, packaged in deluxe tip-on jacket.

Vertonen "HACE/26,250' b/w 11° 22.4'N 142° 35.5'E" LP
The audio on this LP was inspired by early efforts to explore extreme locations on earth, and the clash between the will of humans, the limits of their bodies, and the immutable laws of the natural world-the latter which can easily destroy both of the first two.

The 11° 22.4'N 142° 35.5'E" side is based on the 1960 dive by Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh in the bathyscaphe Trieste to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point on earth.

This side aims to mirror the combination of analytic scientific preparation and calibration that the team did and the inherent and unavoidable human concern of "if something goes wrong, there's a good chance we could die."

The HACE/26,250' side was inspired by research on High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), a condition where oxygen is not getting to the brain.

HACE has the greatest potential for striking in the Dead Zone, (26,250 feet), where available oxygen cannot sustain human life for more that 3 hours. Of course, for someone aiming to summit Mt Everest, there are "only" 2,750 feet remaining-and, the person still has to descend back through the Dead Zone. With their goal so closely in reach, a climber may sacrifice the rational (saving their life) for the sake of achieving their goal (summiting Everest).

HACE/26,250' is a soundtrack for a body closing down; heart rates slowing, blood flow slowing, everything once moist and carrying life slowly becoming brittle, dry, and unable to function due to duress.

Vertonen is Blake Edwards and devices-for this LP, the primary device is a Russian Polivoks synthesizer. Based in Chicago, Illinois, Edwards has performed at numerous festivals in the US, as well as toured the US and Japan. In addition to numerous 7" records, 3" CDRs, full-length CDRs, and split 12" records, Vertonen also has released three CDs funded by City of Chicago grants (as is this record).

This is a split label release with C.I.P.
Released in a limited edition of 200 copies, packaged in deluxe tip-on jacket.

The first large ensemble was a 13-Tet in Los Angeles (documented on the California Ax 4xCD set released by Helicopter) which was guided by a graphic score. 16 Bitch Pile-Up "Bury Me Deep" CD
The California dreams that led to death... There's twists, bends, curves, scrapes, and bumps. The atmosphere was simply frustrating and depressing - good! 16 Bitch Pile-Up are a fierce 3 piece squall of Heartland (now California) electronics, thick moans, and scraped effects. Aaron Dilloway "White Hair b/w Amputation" 7"
Here is another entry in the BloodLust! Detroit chapter, this time coming from Aaron Dilloway. For this single, Dilloway (Hanson Records, Wolf Eyes, The Beast People, Miscarriage, Violent Ramp, etc.) offers up two unique pieces of unsettlingly dark electronics. The creeping, slow-paced A-Side is highlighted by its underwater synth style and its insistent-yet-mysterious vocals. The B-Side starts off with a much harder, oscillating impact, and it evolves into something akin to what might be the final sounds heard before a psychedelic death. Fans of early 1980s synth, industrial, and power-electronics (e.g. Maurizio Bianchi, Lustmord, Esplendor Geometrico, Kraang) will surely bask in the decayed, anxiety-inducing sound of this record. Limited to 300, pressed on white vinyl.

Aemae "The Helical Word" CD
Computer drone & noise written and recorded by Brandon Nickell over an intensive two-year period between 2003 and 2005 in Oakland,CA. Aemae "Maw" CD
“The Helical Word” was my first introduction to AEMAE’s experimental mayhem and I instantly was addicted to its harrowing visionary application of noise. Brandon Nickell’s follow-up “Maw” presents even more depth at crafting noise into something musical and intriguing. Exploring raw sine waves and frequency patterns, “Maw” fits not into the noise or IDM category but into the out-of-this-world variety. For if aliens were revealed to have been living among us, it’s a safe bet that I’d assume that Nickell is their leader and he is taking over our minds with brainwave manipulation via sound. Textures of ambience float among the flickers of electronic feedback and synthetic intricacies that make “Maw” a commanding force in the electronic music field.

The Alienst "Drone Action Trio" CDr
Our material is quite different from the earlier, solo studio work. It is 100% live and improvised. There is my analog synth, Evan's contact mics, Tom's voice, and all of us using laptops. We are as one creating the drone, our sounds blend and build into a cumulus cloud of sound. Unlike some other noise artists, we're not trying to hurt your ears. Lay back, turn this up, and enter the black hole. (from label)

Alio Die "Aurea Hora" 10"

Alio Die "Under an Holy Ritual" LP
Re-release of the classic Alio Die masterpiece. "Under an Holy Ritual" is a ritual ambient milestone and probably the most highly regarded release from this Italian ambient composer. Remastered for vinyl in 2005. "Multi-layered sonic densities that can evoke the air of ancient storms one minute, then ebb like an immense black ocean the next. This knows how to alter moods with both thick electronic pulses and prehistoric scrapes of mysterious percussions. Cerebral, spooky, and thought provoking meditative/ambient music that harkens from a ritualistic viewpoint." (I/E Magazine)

Altar of Flies / Sewer Election split LP
Two of the best acts currently dwelling in the depths of the Swedish underground scene. Sewer Election should be well-known by now, previous releases includes a split 12" with Incapacitants, cds on Troniks and Chondritic Sound and the amazing Killing-tapes. Altar Of Flies has created quite a buzz over the last year with a huge amount of very limited tape/cd-r releases. On this split LP, Sewer Election contributes with the nasty Rotten Corpse. A crude and disgusting piece. Monotonous, freezing coldness. Altar Of Flies continues with his dark and eerie forest rumblings. Buried claustrophobic lo-fi insanity straight from hell. Heavy outbursts of feedback. Could've been outtakes from an old Dario Argento soundtrack. Mean-spirited ugliness from both bands. Limited edition of 325.

Anakrid "Fever Dream Fever" LP
Critically acclaimed sound artists Anakrid present another in a series of limited run explorations into alien occultic territory. Hailing from the same school of abstract surrealism that brought the world Nurse With Wound, Hafler Trio, SPK, and Coil, Anakrid presents a unique take on the “difficult listening” genre with a passionately constructed and focused dynamic racket. Veering from the contemporary groupthink of noise for the sake of noise, Anakrid takes the listener on journies through bizarre soundscapes without being overly long-winded in the approach. A refreshing get-in and get-out policy creates an LP that is essentially 12 mini Robotrips on wax. Each piece is a ritual excursion unto itself, yet the etirety of the album works brilliantly as a whole (or as a hole).

Asmus Tietchens and Jon Mueller "Acht Stucke" CD
Second collaborative effort between german sound manipulation pioneer Asmus Tietchens and american improv-drummer Jon Mueller. The CD features 8 tracks that run up to 53 minutes. Jon Mueller on the second collaboration: "The previous collaboration between Asmus and I involved me using only sounds derived from drum heads. For Acht Stuecke, I've used only Chinese gongs and cymbals, so a completely different range of sound occurs. The performance of the percussion material was from various non-mechanical techniques (striking, swinging gongs, extended techniques, etc.) to create a palette of mostly textural sound with a large frequency range that Asmus could work with." And indeed, work he did! The completeness that is Acht Stuecke is of breathtaking beauty and simplicity and complexity at the same time. The album is definately more homogenous and 'together' than the first meeting of the two musicians. It emanates a warm and deep sound evolving out of total soundless blankness as it seems. Jon Mueller has been active for several years in the us improv scene playing in various ensembles and doing solo work. Asmus Tietchens has been producing electronic music since the 1960ies and is one of the most renowned sound artists today in Germany. In the last five years he was awarded twice the SWR state radio prize "Karl Sczuka Preis" for radio art. He has released more than 80 records and CDs on labels all around the world. Axolotl / D Yellow Swans / Gerritt LP
Originally released in 2005 as a limited edition CD-R on Yellow Swans' JYRK label, this three-way collab now gets a proper run on wax. Recorded in Oakland at the Huffin House before the Swans made the retreat back to Portland. Despite the weight of these players when they rock alone, this jam really never gets into full on white out territory. Instead, it's loaded to the brim with wavy neon distortion and soothing low end that occasional drops out into hugh washes of emptiness. The opening passage of GMS guitar flecks sympathizing with Karl's string wash is alone worth the price of admission. Red vinyl with lime green splatter.

Review: Two of the most prolific and inventive noise musicians from the past decade have merged and delivered "Brainstorming". Both abstract and impressionistic, each piece inspires a concrete vision by association.<- Comes packaged in a killer digipak with spot U.V. coat!

Bhob Rainey "Two Bites of a Bitter Sweet" 7"
Bhob Rainey is an established bigwig of the global improv/noise/experimental underground as a result of his work alongside trumpeter Greg Kelley in the influential duo, nmperign, his direction of the improvising juggernaut, The BSC, and his numerous solo works and collaborations with the likes of Jason Lescalleet, Gunter Muller, Ralf Wehowsky, Le Quan Ninh, Alessandro Bosetti, and Michel Doneda, among others.
Two Bites of a Bitter Sweet is his first release of purely electronic music, and Evolving Ear is tickled to be the messenger on this one. The material on the two side-long, 33rpm pieces ranges from homemade synth textures to field recordings from Lisbon, Venice, Huelva, and other, unremembered locations. There's some singing by Naomi Yang (Damon and Naomi) and Bhob himself, and some words of wisdom from Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Overall, a woozy alternate reality is offered for repeated dream pool swims.

Birchville Cat Motel "Gunpowder Temple of Heaven" CD
Birchville Cat Motel is the project of New Zealander Campbell Kneale, who has from his base in Lower Hutt since the mid 90-ies established himself as the leading voice of this generation of NZ sound artists. Gunpowder Temple of Heaven is a new highlight in his extensive discography. A single 40 minute long-form piece that keeps building and unfolding; heaven for drone-noise enthustiasts.
The CD comes with a booklet with a complete Birchville discography as well as liner-notes by Bruce Russell.
From the liner notes of Bruce Russell (The Dead C): "I've been listening to the music of Campbell Kneale for more than a decade now. Recently I've been listening with a sense of increasing admiration as he stacks up monumental sound slabs in an architecture of audition - building a lofty tower of sound. Always a dedicated worker at whatever he does, Campbell had mastered the detailed work required to place many sounds accurately across each another. Often this kind of 'more is more' strategy backfires into murky sludge, where the increasing layers merely obscure each other. On the contrary, the more BCM puts into a piece, the more you hear coming out."

Bloodyminded "Phases: Two" CDr
Following the style of the "Phases : One" August 2006 tour cassette, "Phases : Two" continues the SCTL (Source Control) processing methodology - brought back from the Intrinsic Action era - this time applying it to live versions of "Magnetism" songs that were recorded on the August tour. The resulting 60-minute recording is characterized by a mixture of spoken voices, heavy screaming, audience member participation, out of control synthesizers, feedback, rumbling, sudden "rushing" sounds, screeching, etc., all vying for the listener's attention. Limited edition of 200.

Burning Star Core "Challenger" CD
"Challenger is a composed work rather than his more improvised work, each piece revolving around a central melodic theme with field recordings, an audio diary bridging the gaps. It's emotions of a period of time set to tape. The sounds range from pure tonal mood to huge electronic crescendos. But what's most remarkable is the use of space, where parts come in and drop to build or recede .When the piano crashes in "Mysteries of the Organ" its almost a frustration of paradise, a rejection of perfection or maybe a jolt of inexplicable life, unable to be translated into proper 'communication. Juxtaposed with the quiet haunting of "Hopelessly Devoted" which sounds like a love letter written to outer space, it makes for an album that is both dynamic yet consistent as a full statement. licensed from plastic records."-Hospital Productions

Five chapters of sound inspired by one of the most powerful and complex emotions of humankind. Arrogance is a departure from the digital machine insanity of his previous full length release, Welcome Home (Important Records), for a world of total analog electronics, primal energy, walls of monumental sound and precise attention to layers - creating massive slowly evolving structures that are both beautiful and terrifying. Christian Renou "Fragments and Articulations" CD
Christian Renou has been making electro-acoustic music for 17 years. His first cassette release was back in 1985. From 1985 to 2001 he recorded under the name Brume. He then started using his own name with the release of Zona Ventille in 2001 by Elsie and Jack Recordings. While the name changed, the style of music did not. Christian Renou is still putting out very high quality music in the new French tradition. "Fragments and Articulations" is no exception.

Daniel Menche "The Face of Vehemence" CD
My influence and inspiration for "The Face of Vehemence" is the book "Sun and Steel" by Yukio Mishma. The CD title "Face of Vehemence" is basically what I see in Yukio Mishimas face; especially on the book cover. Almost all of his photos he has that "face of vehemence". When I finally read his book "Sun and Steel" it was like a "take the words out outa my mouth" experience but articulated absolutly perfectly in a manner I could never do with words. How he percieved "words" in relating to the flesh is how I percieve "sound" in relating to the flesh. Yukio Mishmas attitude towards art/flesh/death/spirit is highly inspiring towards my music." -Daniel Menche

Free jazz meets grindcore head-on within the ranks of this incredible improvisational band, which formed in 2001. With Seth Putnam (AC) on bass and vocals, Robert Williams (Nightstick, Siege) on drums, Jim Hobbs (Fully Celebrated Orchestra) on alto sax and Chris Joyce (the Nothings) on guitar. Evol "Magia Potagia" CD
Evol is a computer music duo formed in 1996 by Roc Jimènez de Cisneros and Anna Ramos in Barcelona. Their recordings and performances explore the many sides of digital noise and algorithmic-driven composition. Harsh and bloody trips along the most extreme path of academic music, putting together sonic brutality, crazy algebra, fractal structures and a slight ironic touch. When they are not working on Evol, they are probably playing Playstation, building Lego robots, trying to run their home-imprint Alku, spreading digital Chindogus from imbecil.net or feeding Perkele, the luckiest chinchilla in Europe. "Magia Potagia" is a document of the work Evol have been doing within the field of algorithmic composition for the past three years. It features three tracks from two different periods, all of them 100% computer-generated and almost no edited at all, to preserve their fractal nature.

Friendly Bears/Infidel? Castro! split 12"
A face off between two of New York City's finest, yet criminally unknown, groups of head rolling subway dementia. Friendly Bears take the long side with 4 songs of juttering, hypnotically repetitive obtuseness. Jarring yet unabrasive, and smoothed over totally by that cool and tax dollar collected trumpet playing by Mr. Tim Barnes, formerly of Candidria. A serious sweatshop workout by these up and comers and their debut release with hopefully much more to come. Infidel go dark red and polarize your memories of th' Bears spider web sensibilities in a demonstrative, God-like way. Cut up harshness filled with more off-sampling than the last three Matmos albums. This side'll make your neighbors think your parents never treated your right. A remix and combination of both their past album "Case Studies In Bioentropy" and their forth coming full length "Bioentropic Damage Fractal." Musique Concrete meets abstract metal? This is the violence of hygiene. Limited to 350 copies!

Frode Gjerstad/Lasse Marhaug "Red Edge" CD
From label:oh man. must be that these norwegeians get bored out of their minds inwinter. something keeps them rocking out an insane number of releases. these two boys have joined forces before, but that doesn't mean you've heard anything like this. gjerstad unleashes free noise flotation saxophone licks from somewhere between his lips and his lungs. marhaug backs him up with electronics that range from glitch-like to to lo-fi to just straight rumbling. he manages to run all over the place, but frode's overpowering sax (and his consistency with it) keeps him in line. co-released with carbon, sunship and breathmint. first gameboy disc to come all shrinkwrapped and fancy-like. it even has an anti-theft device so if you try and lift it from the virgin megastore, you are so busted.

Fun From None "Live at the No Fun Fest 2004-2005" DVD
Brooklyn in the year 2004 saw a meeting of the most unlikely minds. All the party wreckers of civilization that have been rattling in the closet for the 80's and 90's recording and performing that thing that is called "noise" and quietly drew close circle for a true oddity - a summit of some of the HI NRG soundmakers using every instrument within reach. You hold in your hands a document of this strange thing. An open window in culture has allowed you to see this trade convention. The trade this convention is busking, you ask? the business of making human minds wrap themselves around furrowed brow sweat soaked oscillator operation, lap top foppery, cutlery amplification, guitar strangulation, and every other way to physically move air to the ear you can imagine. This is a DVD document of crazed live actions of sound pirates doing a log clog of frequency jam well outside the regular FM beamed crap that pollutes this stuffed melon hellhole: Battleship Earth. What are you waiting for, suit up. Track listing: to live and shave in LA, alan licht's 1970, kim g and the sweetride, giffoni/nyoukis, wolf eyes, hair police, nautical almanac, double leopards, ranaldo/hooker/miller, prurient, magik markers, giffoni death unit, jazzkamer, heathen shame, dead machines, mouthus, nihilist assault group, 16 bitch pileup, monotract, macronympha, borbetomagus.

Gal "Relisten" CD
The work of Austrian sound artist Bernhard Gal is concerned with the discovery (as opposed to the imposition) of musical structures within the nuances of everyday life. The stammering in the spaces of spoken language, the ubiquitous noise of urban environments, the steady stream of buzzes and whirrs that are a byproduct of mass transportation, all become subjects examined under Gal's extraordinarily precise microscope. He explores ideas about time and language, extrapolating and enlarging and repeating the often overlooked details and minutiae until their inherent sonic beauty supersedes their typical mundane habitat.
Following last year's critically acclaimed "Defragmentation/Blue" CD (Plate Lunch, GER), Relisten is Gal's first domestic US album. Each of the six tracks is its own self-contained piece, spurred by some personal association to the composer. However, taken all together, one can travel by sound from New York City (where Gal spent a year's residency at the Leo Baeck Institute) to the subways of Vienna and beyond. The piece lv, nv uses adaptive filters to uncover hidden musical elements always present at a Vegas casino. Another, Tong-hua yie-shi could be described as real-time musique concrete, created by walking through a Taiwanese night market equipped with a stereo microphone, DAT, and headphones.
"Relisten operates between the world's soundscapes and their detachment from context", says Gal. "The personal discovery of music within nature as well as within the routines of everyday life keeps fascinating me. Sometimes I return to a certain place only to record its sound." Gate To Gate "I Turn Black Keys" CD
Confused like a two-headed snake trying to bite its own non-existant tail, Gate to Gate churn through gross tones, bass shudder and worst of all - vocals - with exactly the maladroit precision you'd expect from such a beast. This release presents one new 38 minute mess of blackened clatter and clunk, as well as collects their two extremely limited cassettes BANE and HOUSE WITH THE CLOCK IN ITS WALLS in remastered form. Heavy-handed and heavy-footed industrial noise by all accounts. from the blackened minds of Greh (Hive Mind, Chondritic Sound) and Mike Connelly (Hair Police, Wolf Eyes, Gods of Tundra). nearly 80 minutes of PURE SLUDGE.

A dark and murky tale of higher dimensional travels and communications. Comes packaged in killer orange Dielectric sleeve. Limited edition of 500! Highly recommended.
Aquarius records review->While traces of his industiral noise side occasionally surface, this is a way more subtle and creepy beast. Percussive clatter sounding like pipe fights and rushing water, gurgling and bubbling, hissing static, and throbbing crunch are stretched and spread out over a dark and spare soundscape. Very haunting and disorienting. Creepy, squealing clanks and clunks, horroscapes of high-end creaks and indescribable knocks and bumps, coalesce into lugubrious non-rhythms, culminating in the epic final track that is more empty nothingness than anything requiring close listening and evoking dark musty hallways, lonely dirt paths, and all sorts of unspeakable darkness.

"GX-Jupitter-Larsen's first use of the camera was a 1979 piece in which he smashed up several videos by hitting them with a video camera. From 1982 to 1986 GX submitted a silent blank video to over forty video festivals. It was screened in nine. This DVD features ten of GX's videos (1983-2006) which filter a lexicon of recurring themes through a spectrum of movie motifs and narrative strategies. You'll see skiers stop to build an empty hole in the snow, nomadic bikers debating the polywave, a spy being led from one mysterious note to another, lesbian vampires working on their garlic farm and a visitation that gives a professor the inspiration to invent a gadget that transforms lives. What you'll hear is pure noise, most of which is derived from amplified erosion."

Hijokaidan "Polar Nights Live" CD
Hijokaidan has since 1979 been one of the leading voices in Japanese noise music. Starting out with a broad line-up of performers, eventually in the course of the 80-ies the Hijokaidan sound became easily identifiable with the shredding guitar-sound of band-leader Jojo Hiroshige and the high-pitched piercing voice of Junko. Few noise acts have such an instantly recognizable (and intense) sound.
Although Hijokaidan's status as noise superstars they rarely perform outside Japan. The pleasure was then ever greater for the All Ears festival in Oslo Norway to present Hijokaidan at their festival in january 2006. Polar Nights Live documents these historical and astonishing performances.
Jojo and Junko performed as a Hijokaidan two-piece on the opening night of the festival, a rarely heard line-up. Their performance got such a tremendous response that they came back for an encore (Otomo Yoshihide, longtime Hijokaidan fan who also performed at the festival, proclaimed "Incredible! Hijokaidan never does encores!"). The second night Jojo collaborated with guitarist Per Gisle Galåen (DEL, The Birds), unleashing thick layers of psychedelic and distorted guitar fog, which fans of of Fushitsusha, Les Rallizes Denudes and Jojo's non-Hijokaidan work will appreciate. The final night saw Junko hooking up with noise-nik Sten Ove Toft (Ryfylke) for a hellish meltdown of twisted electronics and the most intense voice in music.
Unlike most other noise acts Hijokaidan has not spoiled their fans with a huge number of releases, which makes Polar Nights Live an even more unique statement of pure noise sound.

Incapacitants "Burning Orange" CD
Incapacitants needs no introduction; the duo of fumio kosakai and t.mikawa; veterans and originators of japanese noise music; cult band number one for noise fanatics worldwide; a band whose infamous status as the best live noise act ever has continued to grow over the years because the duo almost never plays outside of japan.
in january 2007 incapacitants performed live, for the second time in europe in 25 years, at the all ears festival in oslo norway for an overly enthusiastic audience (people from all around europe had travelled to see their heroes). the band later described the two shows as highlights of their career.
burning orange documents these concerts. the cd consists of two complete sets; one incapacitants as a duo and on the second joined by finnish noise-connoisseur tommi keränen (testicle hazard) as a trio under the name of fumio tommiakawa (a take on gomikawa fumio; the trio of pain jerk and incapacitants).
the sound of incapacitants is described in the liner notes of burning orange by tommi keränen as "an inspiring, pure, all-encompassing, ecstatic storm of sound that has a power of near-religious proportions – and that alone, without any unnecessary gimmicks". that celebratory ecstasy certainly comes across on burning orange, of which keränen also handled the post-production under the supervision of mikawa.

Incapacitants/Sewer Election LP
this track by the Incapacitants was originally intended for a compilation on Lasse Marhaug’s Jazzassin label a few years back. For some reason this never appeared and we thankfully got this in our shaky but amused hands. So, what did we get? A weak an’ol’ Japanese couple bursting out with a singalong? HELL NO. This is a trustworthy show-off in approach. The standard trademark frenetic vocals, yes. An intense organic and thick pile of nonsensical bodymassage from start to end, yes. Fuck it, the pure energetic electronic sound of Toshiji Mikawa and Fumio Kosakai remains unrivalled to this day and you can never get enough wiping out your state of being. Dan Johansson, the man behind the moniker Sewer Election has gained quite a lot of attention in the noise community the last years. Perhaps not for reinventing the genre (who’s interested in that anyway?) but fittingly licking the balls of frustration forward into perfection. This particular track shows a continuation of his latter day style = a monotonous noise wall intertwined with serious brainmelting stasis, skipping the intense cut-up style of the early days altogether. As fine as a bottle of Bäska Droppar, rippled with metamphetamine from the gutter. Oh, let’s not forget the Usual Unnecessary Information Section: First intended as a split 10”, however we all agreed the extreme nature of these sounds demanded nothing less than a 12” vinyl on 45 rpm for a maximum quality experience. Color covers, 500 copies pressed. Enjoy!

Jazzkammer "Panic" CD
With great power comes great responsibility, and nobody knows this better than the Norwegians. With Oil reserves and government surpluses to set teeth gnashing in jealousy across Europe they certainly have the power bit sorted, but responsibility? Well they’ve already given us Black Metal, and now they seem to be quite happy making ear crushing noise, with Lasse Marhaug at the forefront – distortion pedal in hand. Apparently the ‘theme’ of this particular recording is urban degradation and decomposition - something which is also illustrated beautifully inside the cd booklet, but Jazzkammer's duo of Marhaug and fellow noisy Norwegian John Hegre take hold of their trusty guitars to explore these themes with a gutsy vibe that's hard to describe. Their last album, the utterly stunning ‘Metal Machine Music’ took their sound into devastating new directions, and ‘Panic’ feels like a logical continuation, providing us with crushing drones and feedback that should be patented with the Norwegian flag attached. With the glorious droning bass-heavy doom of Sunn O))) in mind, the two musicians battle their way through one gigantic 35 minute piece, battling with their axes, layering field recordings, drones and sheets of white noise. Surprisingly much of this disc is quite warmingly ‘ambient’ for want of a better word, with nods to romantic guitar dronesters Stars of the Lid, but mid-way through the distortion erupts like Mount Etna laying waste to countless eardrums in the process. Like the soundtrack to a melancholy documentary about the decline of modern society, this gives us a deep emotional core but also a strong narrative laced with despair and unease. ‘Panic’ is a simply huge release from two of Norway’s most gifted sons.

Jazzkammer "Pulse" CD
Jazzkammer are Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre from Norway. Together they have been making music as Jazzkammer since 1998. Past releases include Timex, Rolex (a remix album), Pancakes and a live album with Merzbow. Jazzkammer are relentless sound explorers with no set style or specific 'sound' -- they move swiftly from hardcore overload electronics and sonic freakouts to lowercase soundscapes and location recordings. Once described as 'sonic architects', Marhaug and Hegre insist they are merely trying to make 'good music'. Pulse was recorded in Singapore during the SARS-crisis in April of 2003. It was inspired by a theatre piece of the same title that they were working on at the same time, though the music on the CD does not resemble that of the play. The album Pulse is a single beautiful 32-minute piece; its basic structure is a drifting electronic drone that slowly unfolds and mutates, with subtle layers of location recordings and vinyl-static adding color and depth. Like last year's Pancakes, Pulse has a cinematic feel to it, a feeling that is further enhanced by the photos of acclaimed photographer Yuen Chee Wai that grace the cover and 12-page booklet.

John Wiese "Circle Snare" CD
Consider "Circle Snare" a hard-wrought souvenir. Composed and realized in the midst of a comprehensive Scandinavian/European tour in 2008, John Wiese found himself tangled deep in dialogue with his instruments and ideas. Wiese increasingly scrutinized his native tongue and vocabulary, seeking new forms of grammar and cadence, as only extensive dives in unfamiliar waters can inspire. His given electronic anatomy of drum machine, microphones, tapes, and MSP folded out of their hard accustomed formations, breaking out into a more cogent and vital arsenal. "Circle Snare" is the cumulative result -- a finely detailed and dimensional evolution of an already unique voice. Those who have been stalking Wiese all along -- through the landmark statement "Soft Punk," to the recent "Dramatic Accessories" LP -- will find "Circle Snare" to be a revelatory work. As Wiese continues to travel and work relentlessly and restlessly, we have no choice but to keep up; the circle is a spiral from the side, and the greatest trap is standing still.

Teenage Hallucination is a compendium of Wiese's initial recordings as a teenager to his seminal early vinyl appearances. From pure analog bedroom havoc to intense cut-up harsh noise blasts, Wiese steadily developed his highly personal and specific style of extreme music while trying to survive the St. Louis experience. 52 tracks in nearly 80 minutes of the best material from his Catwoman 7", split LP with The Haters, split 5" with Panicsville, collaborative tracks with GX Jupitter-Larsen (The Haters) and Corydon Ronnau (Sissy Spacek), and featuring many completely unreleased and unheard tracks of isolated midwest basement obscurity. Full liner notes by T.Mikawa (Incapacitants/ Hijokaidan) and Seymour Glass (Bananafish). Limited to 1,000 copies.

Kenneth Atchley "Fountains" CD Lionel Marchetti "Sirrus" CD
"Long time sound installation artist from San Francisco debuts (finally) with this beautifuly packaged CD. Booklet contains various pictures of the "Fountains" exhibit that was used to make the recording. "These fountains were formalized over a period of 4 years: reading J. Antonio Maravali's The Culture of the Baroque; glossy fashion magazines, British dance journals; books of folds, multiplicities, architecture, the lives and deaths of poets and painters; listening to CDs and radio Handel, various Bachs, F. Couperin, Schubert; all for hours by fountains in the temporary clarity of nicotine, sitting absorbed in the white spray of water, in audience of street opera, traffic, office buildings; deafening sound of patrons and music in overly designed ephemeral restaurants; bass of automobile sound systems doppler along sycamore lined Grand Avenue; rain falling in alley outside my apartment; contemplating Kelly, Rothko and geometry of public spaces; drinking wine slips ! from glass through conversation to fountains down water steps and steep office canyons study and sink into catalogs of monochrome paintings and years torn from elegance and noble materials by speed of blur of noise of mid-air contemplation of The Moment Poised.
Of the Artifice of Stasis: fountains flow from accoustic spaces between compressed crystals and metal, diaphragms and water, vessels and pumps, airless circuits and field recordings: trashcans, metal tubs, tap water, PVC tubing, over sealant and mats, beneath black polyethylene and waterproof tape, through speakers and headphones at three minutes and ten seconds of track one stereo is a representation of identity; while in discreet channels, identity - though not specificity - subsides and noise becomes this plaza of unnamed and future into a new fountain. This is not of waves, nor ripples on the surface; but on top of that: the foam, the embellishment." -- Kenneth Atchley

Kevin Drumm and Daniel Menche "Gauntlet" CD
Adorned with cover art no doubt intended to throw you off the scent (teenage ice skaters by the looks of it, a far cry from 'Satanstornade' is it not) 'Gauntlet' is a single track produced with prolific Portlander Menche on 'organ and noise' and his foil Drumm on 'guitar and noise'. Drumm has spent some time now perfecting his signature tabletop guitar abuse and that has never been more evident than now with fuzzed out guitar lines forging the backbone of the album's opening act. Eventually the plucked arpeggio (which could easily be the opening riff of some 90s metal hit or other...) gets swallowed into the mire of white noise and bending fuzz - something which whether they like it or not reminds me more of My Bloody Valentine than Merzbow. It's no bad thing either and the dense fog of harmonic noise is soon violated by Menche's effected organ, which is expertly mixed to disorientate headphone listeners until an abrupt noisy epiphany is reached at around eleven minutes in, which grows into a soup of electronic dissonance and fractured pink noise. Eventually the noise drops away like an avalanche to reveal Menche's droning organ which carries us mournfully into the piercing final act. What could easily have been an ear pummelling assault into the extremities of aural punishment (for that escapade you should really check Drumm's 'Sheer Hellish Miasma', also on eMego) actually turns out to be a genuinely enjoyable experience, and connoisseurs of the guitar noise genre (Skullflower etc) should find much to bury their heads into here.

KK Null "Prime Radiant" CD
'Prime Radiant' is noise as a spray of blood-red roses, a vast wash of colour concealing six inch thorns. Kazuyuki Kishino has been at the forefront of the Japanese noise scene for over 20 years, both as guitarist/leader of extremist sludge rockers Zeni Geva and as a solo artist exploring the outer territories of electronica. Along with Masonna and Merzbow, he is part of a trinity of noisemakers whose work seems to operate at the very limits of human endurance. Like theirs, Null's work transcends its surface violence and reveals something rich and strange at its core. What makes this montage of live and studio work marginally less forbidding than usual is its abrupt change of mood and texture; rather than pummelling an idea into the dust, he covers a lot of sonic ground here, albeit a terrain of savagely blasted extremes. Kishino has said that he tries to imagine through his work what music from other galaxies might sound like. If the little green men are all listening to this stuff for fun, 'Prime Radiant' is a scary prospect for sure." - the Wire

Revolving around pedals, microphones, laptop and found objects, Lap Dancer's "Noise for Skirt Manipulation" strikes with impeccable precision. The 24 minute live improvisation, "Driving on Windy Days," while featuring no overdubbing or editing, blossoms in rich fullness and swirls through shades of varying distortion, continually shifting and mutating are the crescendos and resolutions. The remaining three pieces feature harsh microphone and pedal play and a squealing collage of sharp feedback. In its brevity, “Noise for Skirt Manipulation" smoothly manages to seduce, sedate and strangle the listener.

Lionel Marchetti "Sirrus" CD
"Recorded at the age of 22 back in 1989 (but just recently released), "Sirrus" stands as one of the earliest documentations from French musique concrete composer Lionel Marchetti. This is a trilogy based upon abstract interpretations of natural phenomenon using a variety of speaker techniques coupled with musique concrete tape splices. As a whole the album is a decentralised construction, where the various interludes throughout the album appear to hold resemblances to a narrative that continues from point-a to point-b, but are stopped short of reaching a resolution with a harsh edit that leads into another interlude of sound. At times these interludes are wild flanges on analogue electronics, other times they are dense multi-tracked recordings of clattering wood (very much like Xenakis's "Concret PH" with its amplifications of burning charcoal), others are controlled feedback squeallings from microphone and speaker constructions, and others again are eerie drones toppled by bursting noises. Quite complex and powerful, this is easily my favorite composition from Marchetti."

Lionel Marchetti & Seijiro Murayama "Hatali Atsalei" CD
For his second Intransitive album, Lionel Marchetti returns to his favorite subject: the modern musique concrete composer as shaman. Amid an atmosphere of heavy mystery and engrossing, sublime confusion, Hatali Atsalei (L’Echange des Yeux) seems to be informed by radio drama, improvisation, and documentary recording. According to Olivier Capparos’ liner notes, the album provides a “rather faithful” experience of Ancient Greek ritual: Hatali Atseli, the exchange of eyes. Marchetti the alchemist takes the listener to the scene of an imaginary sacred rite, drawing us in with hints of narrative, only to throw expectations aside with the slice of razor on tape. Fire, water, wind instruments and percussion are blended with the voice of collaborator Seijiro Murayama to create something which is not quite a representation of ritual, but is a ritual itself that becomes completed by the act of listening.

Nerve Net Noise "Dark Garden" CD
Dark Garden, the new album of thrillingly idiosyncratic analog buzz by Nerve Net Noise (aka: homemade synth duo Hiroshi Kumakiri and Tagomago), is the perfect entry-point for listeners new to their singular sonic world. Where previous albums have explored a single sonic idea at a time, Dark Garden is their most varied and (relatively) accessible album yet. Which is not to say that it won’t cause heads to turn everywhere this is played in public. Dark Garden is an album of short, song-like synthesizer pieces, taking cues from manga, science fiction, early electronic music, and minimal techno… but as always, the Tokyo band resides firmly in their own inexplicable universe. It assimilates fractured beats, bubbling pulses, and impatient drones into an album that’s somehow both playfully alive and coldly menacing. In his liner notes, synth builder Kumakiri describes spirits that lurk in the shadows and watch people go about their lives, existing in a parallel world that brings to mind fairy tales and myth. Nerve Net Noise’s music is similarly just out of reach, present in the natural world but not quite a part of it. For fans of Klaus Schultze, Jessica Rylan, Henri Pousseur, or Pan Sonic…

Oakeater "Intrusion" tape
Debut release from this Chicago trio! Comprised of Seth Sher (COUGHS), Jeremy Fisher (PANICSVILLE), and Alex Barnett (BRENT GAND IS DEAD), Oakeater builds tension of malignant proportions. Dark listening environments for late night forest foraging. Early comparisons yielded BOY DIRT CAR... their first show is included with this release (which incidentally was what bore said comparison). Limited edition of 100 copies with silk screened covers.
Behind the Walls ; Tape Review from MacheteMob Blogspot - "Purportedly a collab between members of Panicsville and Coughs, this tape is a haunted drifting sound track to bad dreams. Unhuman voices speak partially heard nothings, sheets of feed back and physical bass tone swoop down and occasionally pummel the dreamer. There is a wide range of material here, ranging from pounding industrial, to layers of swirling effected blur. Very good. This release reminds me somewhat of the Andy Ortmann "Night Mania" album Nihilist released last year. I always look forward to hearing new Nihilist releases, as they seem to me to be much closer to absurdly disturbing sounds of R&G, Sudden Infant, Nurse with Wound, etc. then the modern American noise drivel. Rejoice in the purity of emptyness."

Omei "When All Your Ghosts Are Tired" CD
Omei expresses itself through the idea of "One thought for a thousand years." The same memory played over and over until it drives you. The mind to the grindstone with nothing ahead but hours and hours of empty slow time. Two long pieces of grinding, sometimes turbulent minimalist drone and industrial from Chris of SICKNESS side project. The first track takes minimal synth loops (with additional material from James Keeler of Wilt) that slowly loop and march into a grinder of distortion to be spit out - angry and venomous. Aggressive but spent. The second track is field recordings (with additional material from Joe Colley) smashed together and blended into an atmosphere of empty warehouse sounds and abandonment. Negative and burned. Constant movement and shifting, panning and empty reverb.

Oscillating Innards "Grey Variables" LP
"Long awaited 1st full-length LP by American vital slugger Gordon Ashworth is finally out. Two long tracks documented in Portland, Oregon 2006-2007. Fierce and solid burst with shrill metal junk roar, whirl high-frequency feedbacks and brutal vocal, is a circumspect composition of laying heavy assaults from physical strength and depressive electronics. Explosion breaks the silence, the silence erodes explosion. Hand-numbered limited edition 280 copies, comes on clear vinyl in heavy polysleeve with a silkscreened paper band and a postcard. 45rpm for maximum frequency and sparkling dynamics."

Oscillating Innards "Nadir Emergence" CD
Molded and refined throughout 2007 and 2008, Nadir Emergence is the first official CD and second full-length of Oscillating Innards; a document of the recurring and parallel themes of artistic/romantic failure and the forces of insignificance and degradation. Encompassing and hybridizing elements of electroacoustic harsh noise, deliberate tonal studies, atmospheric drone collage and severe power electronics, Nadir Emergence is a dense and breathing environment of evocative sound and lyrics, steeped in continually growing and failing tones, recurring and degrading melody, and vehement sentiment. This is deeply personal music of smoldering roots and crumbling achievement; the secret infidelity and defeat of timbre.

PBK/BMG "1" CDr
Michigan master PBK has been making beautifully composed noise since I was in grade school and BMG - (aka Brent Gutzeit) should be known to most as CEO of Television Power Electric and as an established Kranky recording artist. These two have a wealth of knowledge in the experimental music realm and skills with almost as much range.
With their vast combined talents, the gentlemen produce five uniquely diverse works here, spanning the borders of various subgenres and utlizing everything they could get their hands on. In their warped world guitars become gongs, computers are transformed into human hearts and vinyl breathes. Believe it.

Peeesseye "Commuting Between the Surface and the Underworld" CD
Commuting Between the Surface & the Underworld continues Peeesseye’s pattern of ignoring virtually all patterns but those that spring forth from the swarm of earthquakes in their collective brain. Recorded following an unamplified tour of US noise venues with groups including Nautical Almanac, Life Partners, and Sharks With Wings, this record brings vocals, a more pronounced rhythmic pulse and piles of acoustic instruments to the foreground alongside the waves of electronic density that have characterized past releases. Guests on Commuting Between the Surface & the Underworld include three frequent collaborators of Peeesseye: Clare Cooper, the Australian harpist who adds pedal harp and guzheng (Chinese harp) to two tracks; trumpeter Nate Wooley, who adds brass on “Distant Mud;” and the reclusive conceptualist Shawn Edward Hansen, who provides additional percussion and vocals to two tracks. The resulting record is a perverse twist on spaced rock and post-noise ritual - mayhem in the mansion, shivers in the shack.

Phantom Limb & Tetuzi Akiyama "Hot Ginger" CD
Yet another side to Tetuzi Akiyama’s work is explored here, this time his improvised guitar work is in collaboration with the electric organ and guitar drone of Phantom Limb, for this half-hour long piece recorded at Freepoint radio in Brooklyn. Hot Ginger begins in a state of unsteady fizz, which eventually materializes into a fully-formed organ drone, which itself develops to incorporates the subtle application of amp hiss and reedy feedback tones. About halfway through, there’s a sense of joyous crescendo, with the elongated tones ascending into a noisy barrage of harmonic coherence. It’s after this stretch that Akiyama’s guitar enters into a full flow of slippery sustain and slide guitar phrases. The final moments of the piece gather more solid form, with guitar arpeggios floating atop stony organ drones and lapping delays. A gorgeous piece of abstract improvisation, complete with beautiful silk-screened artwork. Limited to 500 copies.

Prurient / Kevin Drumm "All Are Guests in the House of the Lord" CD
A collaboration between Hospital Productions chief Dominick Pernow (aka Prurient) and noise icon Kevin Drumm, All Are Guest In The House Of The Lord was originally released as a cassette, a most fitting format for such debased, extreme music. 'On This Slab' is pretty stunning, featuring droning synths, what sounds like a recording of a Strauss waltz hammered by distortion and severe filtering - plus there's Pernow's screamed proclamation of the album's title. Next, 'There Died Venus' is awash with dark grey pulsing bleakness, while bells ring out as if you're hearing an unholy call to prayer. 'Though The Apple Is Rotten' is like a recording of stale air, heavy with location sounds and stagnant hiss, all of which serves as a suitable precursor to the ten minute bad vibe fest 'In Long Rows'. Situated at the most misanthropic end of harsh noise music, this thing's a supremely nasty piece of anger mismanagement.

Prurient "Cocaine Death" CD
Cocaine Death is a compilation of three of Prurient's finest Hospital cassette releases as well as two unreleased tracks. The previously released material forms a triptych exploring the relationship between futile pleasure, substance and escape; escape being a myth. Cocaine Death (originally C-10 packaged in an envelope, limited to 46 copies) is perhaps the most sought after of the recent Prurient cassettes. The content is based on the glamour and destruction of toxic nightlife. The B-side features guest vocals from FFH and continues the themes with the addition of bondage. This material is a considered classic modern Prurient. Caribbean Overdose (originally a C-10, packaged in a standard shell package and limited to 100 copies) explores a different but strangely direct topic of the sexual reproductive life of plants. There is nothing common or typical about the sounds and direction of this material. Further examination into the life of scientific advancement and education. Tylenol Murders (originally a C-10, packaged in an oversized envelope and limited to 10 copies) takes the sounds and concepts of the aforementioned releases and expands the sounds to further limits of cracked static, strained vocals and strange melodic loops. This sought after limited material is seeing the light on this release to most Prurient listeners for the first time. Since the inception of both Prurient and the Hospital Productions label, cassette releases have been an essential format for the communication and participation in the industrial/noise culture. packaged in digipack with 16 page color booklet.

Putrefier "Hypertension Classics Vol. 2" 4xCD
Putrefier aka Mark Durgan has been an active member, albeit below the radar, of the UK noise scene since the inception of Putrefier back in 1986. Firstly, starting with his own Birthbiter label which as well as cassettes also was one of the first distribution services to start importing ZSF, Selektion and many Japanese oddities into the UK. Keeping a low-profile has enabled Putrefier to work at his own pace and keeping to his own vision. Throughout the last twenty years records and cassettes have been limited but this latest release should be the start of a fresh outburst of activity. His recordings have turned up on labels such as Broken Flag, Artware, MSBR, RRR and more. This boxset though is the latest release on Harbinger Sound a label with whom he has had a working relationship with now for many years. It features the long out-of-print "Hypertension Classics" double 7" which was sold at shows in Japan during the year 1999 only, plus over four hours worth of quality recordings dating back to 1996 but with most constructed during the 1999-2001 years. If you want pointers think of the possibilities of good Voice Crack, the INA-GRM extremities & "Crash for Hi-Fi" era Merzbow being dropped into a pinball machine! Yes, it is that good!
After many shows alongside the likes of Ramleh, The New Blockaders, Merzbow, Pain Jerk, Incapacitants, MSBR, Thirdorgan, Emil Beaulieau. Schimpfluch Gruppe / R&G, and many others , Putrefier should be embarking on an East Coast tour of the USA during April 2006 alongside Smell & Quim, Onomatopoeia & Deepkiss 720.

R. H. Y. Yau "Coagulation: Selected Works 1996-2000" CD
"Completely brutal docomentation of Yau's abject noise actionism completed between 1996 and 2000. As pure as it gets, this collection features rare compilation material and previously unreleased actions, including rare collaboration tracks with Kazumoto Endo."
"Eighteen short, painful blasts of vocal-induced distortion that are easily on the same pain threshold as Merzbow's wall-of-noise works, but without the time commitment Merzbow demands. Coagulation is like a stripped-down Hollowing album, with the same infinite layers of sound mashed together to create chaos (and sometimes all run through a distortion pedal to create thick, blistering walls of static), but without the melodic elements. The main source of Yau's recordings is voice, and for all we can tell there's nothing here BUT voice, just pounded and processed into something unrecognizable most of the time." Robert Beveridge

Raccoo-oo-oon "S/T" CD
Everything's coming to a end with the swansong from Iowa City's Raccoo-oo-oon. Following up last years critically acclaimed Behold Secret Kingdom (RTB/Not Not Fun), the final album takes everything up a notch and shows a band taking their last breath and laying down the last bricks in their fairly short history.
The album blends together all different parts of Raccoo-oo-oons discography, taking cues from the utter freeform punk madness of The Cave Of Spirits Forever (Time Lag), building something completely new of the era that was Behold Secret Kingdom and yet delivering echoes of the eclectic Mythos Folkways recordings. The album reeks of desperation and a feeling of going down with nothing to loose at all. A fucked up future-prog mayhem that is all over the place and at no known place at all at the same time.
Genuinely uncomfortable, desperate and just beautiful, this album will surely be remembered as the most important recording that Racco-oo-oon ever put to tape. Minds are melting, new grounds are covered and things will never be the same.
A playtime of close to 75 minutes over 7 tracks. Mastered by Pete Swanson. Mini gatefoldsleeve with black felt.

Raglani's from St. Louis? He's either spending way too much time on the banks of the Mississippi or whistfully looking to further shores because "Of Sirens Born" is a maritime daydream like nothing else Missouri has ever produced. Arguably the most beautiful and undisputedly the most melodic gameboy release ever, this disc comines lustrous synthesizer work with beautiful guitar lines and a chorus of accompanying electronics and instruments to tell an "Odyssey"-like instrumental tale of a man's heart and it's direct relation to the rush of the tides. CDR edition of 100 with covers made using various blue & green Japanese papers/prints.

Raglani & Scenic Railroads split CD
Raglani's contribution to this split comes in the form of three tracks motivated by a more focused attention to narrative elements and the microrelations between layers of sound. Musical and nonmusical sources dissolve into one another, filling the air with solid memories. Structurally, these pieces are Raglani's most fully realized, and they contain his most explicit nods in the direction of melody. Another chapter in the ongoing negotiation for an affectively deeper form of electroacoustic music. Along with Scenic Railroad's (Mike Shiflet and Joe Panzer) 4 digital improvisations, this disc plays excellently off each other creating a disc with a consistent, organic flow. An edition of 500. co-released with Shiflet's Gameboy records and printed at the infamous thumbprint press.

Raionbashi / Krube "Ansatze Zum Taumel" LP
From the first split second on Krube. grabs your attention with his hyper tight musique concrète that combines sounds from everyday objects, body openings and non-definable machinery. An old accordion may surface but it doesn't prevent him from continuing straightforward cut-ups, thus exploring scary maybe even unknown territory. If he's to perform at your local venue, leave mama at home and witness.
Raionbashi's bunker soundscape seems to be breathing with anxiety. In celebration of his earlier release In Teufels Küche critic Dan Warburton stated that all sounds are "absolutely exquisitely worked and placed with extraordinary attention to detail [...] that makes Löwenbrück, like Milton, a true Poet." His new composition "Musik und Skepsis" goes even further: slow-motion horror musique concrète that'd drive Artaud, Nietzsche and Cioran to fall on their knees in a state of euphoria. No doubt.
Raionbashi, established in 1999, is Daniel Löwenbrück, curator of many shows and festivals in Berlin; he runs the magnificent shop/mailorder rumpsti pumsti and the label Tochnit Aleph. Krube. is a Berliner too. During his job as a concert organizer for innumerable punk and hardcore acts in Saarbrücken he started his solo project in 1999 and eventually moved to the capital four years later. Ansätze zum Taumel is Krube.'s first official release to date. Raionbashi has gained quite a reputation for his releases on Hanson, Absurd and Entr'acte.

Robert Rich "Trances/Drones" 2xCD
As the clichŽ goes, third time's a charm, at least that must be the reasoning behind the latest ambient reissue, the 2-for-1 deal of Robert Rich's early works, recorded and released in various forms between 1981 and 1984. This 2-CD set was originally remastered and reissued in 1993. If the credits are correct, the latest version has not been remastered again, so the only difference this time out is new cover art, and a two-sentence paragraph at the end of Rick Davies liner notes. So if you already own the 1993 reissue, musically speaking there isn't reason to get it again, but collectors will no doubt want to nab this for the new cover art, which is muted mahogany tones, but otherwise similar to the previous release. Ok, that's way too much digression into minutiae, how does it actually sound for those not already acquainted with this seminal work? 'Cave Paintings' opens with crickets and dark echoes that seem to moan in the distance. It is quietly haunting, but also soothing, even comforting in a dark sort of way. The feel and the texture is more important than the structure. It is easy to see how this formed the basis for Robert Rich's sleep concerts. 'Hayagriva' is a live recording from just such an event. Though relatively tame on my home system, in concert I'm sure the deep, booming drones must have rocked the ground the patrons were attempting to snooze on. 'Sunyata (Emptiness)' adds bamboo flute and tibetan bell for an other worldly feel. Disc two opens with 'Seascape,' a 30-minute muted sonic exploration. Like Michael Stearns on 'Morning Jewel,' here Robert Rich combines nature recordings in Mexico, in this case ocean sounds, with minimal ambient textures, courtesy of the Prophet-5 and lap steel guitar, two of Rich's trademarks. Of the six tracks, only the 12-minute 'Resonance' clocks in at less than 20 minutes, so if you are into smaller sound bites with melody and structure, this obviously isn't the place to be. But if 2+ hours of mind expansion without illicit substances is your idea of a good time, look no further. Totally darkened room optional.

Roel Meelkop "5 (Ambiences)" CD
The music of “5 (Ambiences)” deals with ways of approaching and conceptualizing ambient sound, of abstracting sounds from the world until they become much more than documentary observations. The music plays with some referential material (are they field recordings? digitally generated? does it matter?), a very wide dynamic range (to encourage active listening), evocative and even dramatic structures but also forbiddingly impersonal distance. It toys with the notion of “ambient music” (as new age wallpaper) by using ambiences to create deeply involving compositions which change as one changes one’s listening focus. This music is open to any interpretation, or no interpretation at all.

Roel Meelkop "5(zwischenfalle)" CD
5(zwischenfaelle) is the latest release by dutch electronic musician ROEL MELLKOP. It is a special release in Meelkop's catalogue because it is consist of five piece that were originally used in the context of sound installations running over a certain period of time in specific special surroundings. For 5(zwischenfaelle) Meelkop has set himself the task to compress these soundscapes into five dense and still minimal audio pieces that could work outside the context of the original installations. 5(zwischenfaelle) is focussed on single sound events and stark beautiful dynamic movements in a certain area of sound and does not have the bruitistic research-like feel of other solo works by Meelkop. 5(zwischenfaelle) makes for concentrated unpolished ultra minimal listening with maximum effect. For all friends of Bernhard Günter, Francisco Lopez, Joe Colley/Crawl Unit or Marc Behrens this is a definite work!

Scott Arford/Randy H. Y. Yau "Edit for Unconsciousness" CD
The dark, black and white case denies the variety of activity going on here. But 'Edit..' has this vast display of modes that affect the senses like a blindfolded ride through a blacked-out city. Delightful tension and fleeting sonic spectacle are the main experiences here. Four basic tracks encapsulate four different pieces, each with several worlds inside of itself. Yau's 'Realia' is a restless collection of nervous mechanical and organic noises, culminating in a sudden blotch of noise cut off as with a meat-cleaver. Then the 'Headworms' track by Arford meanders in and tinkles around with various objects, collaged utterances from the throat of incidental electronics, the cluttered spiritual clumsiness of messing-about with quiet sonics. But 'Drift Counter' is very nice, a twenty-three minute float through the drifting ranges of warm static and fuzzy mist, undulating and singing, a full experience that leads you into Yau's closing piece of roughly the same length. I'll leave that one for your experience. Excellent material.

Sewer Election "Last Breath" CDr
Sweden's finest forgoes his usual dense harsh noise in favor of equally dense dirty drones. It's still a wall of sound, but far from impenetrable. This wall is more likely to crumble with the slightest touch and leave you buried beneath the rubble. It's a different, but equally effective, methond of simultaneous attack and defense.
A short but epic piece, "Last Breath" unravels in under 20 minutes, but the coma it will induce is guaranteed to last for hours if not days. Indeed this disc makes a perfect soundtrack for those precious moments spent dying, living, or lingering anywhere between the two.

My man Connelly says every Fag Tape has at least a 30% 'hands off' factor, meaning, seems like Llama has a nice mutant groove going on and then just jets for 10min, leaving the machine motionless. If you can tell what the hell is going on inside these grooves...bottle it and sell it, it would be ideal to have on tap.......it could be like taking a skinny dip inside the caverns of a black pool filled to the brim with soul-frying electricity waves. Born Again To Die= maybe our kid's rat kids will COMPREHEND. Then maybe they can attempt to decode FUNKY PANDEMONIUM....'---JOHN OLSON (WOLF EYES, BOY DEPT BOYZ), MAY 2007

Sissy Spacek "California Ax" 4xCD Box
Up to this point Sissy Spacek have only released 4 proper albums, all of which could probably be squeezed together onto one CD. What we have in this release is 4 new full length albums recorded throughout 2007. Tinsel Dripping Ink (disk 1) is 26 tracks in 45 minutes covering all territory from grindcore, noise, electro-acoustic improv, musique concrete, noisecore, and electronics. It's primarily made up of new work, but also roots through the cutting floor for the best bits that didn't make it onto previous efforts for one reason or another, with a few tracks dating as far back as 1998. Police (disk 2) is 11 tracks in 40 minutes of electro-acoustic improv with girls on drums. Abreq Ad Habra (disk 3) gets it's title from an Arabic phrase pre-dating "Abracadabra" that translates "hurl a lightning bolt even unto death" which we'll choose to misread as "hurl an even lightning bolt until death." This disc contains the most raw recordings Sissy Spacek have ever released, the first being a 40 minute inferno recorded on KXLU and the second from a 20 minute live set in 2002 in St. Louis. 13-Tet Los Angeles (disk 4) is a live document of a 13 piece lineup that performed two sets at The Smell in Los Angeles in December 2007 and is also the first live performance of a score by John Wiese. There are also many contributors to this set aside from original members of John Wiese and Corydon Ronnau: Mitchell Brown, Sarah Cake, Kevin Drumm, Gerritt, Kate Hall (Mika Miko), Joseph Hammer (Solid Eye), Aaron Hemphill (Liars, Skull Sküll), Jesse Jackson (Flaspar), Greg Kelley (Nmperign), Tim Koh (White Magic, Ariel Pink), Danny McClain (Grand Ulena), Giles Miller, Oblivia (Smegma), Andy Ortmann (Panicsville), Sam Ott (The Fucking Angels), Tom Recchion (Airway, LAFMS), Damion Romero (Speculum Fight), Jarrett Silberman (Skull Sküll, Young People), Dean Spunt (No Age), David Scott Stone (Melvins, Get Hustle), and Shannon Walter (16 Bitch Pileup).

Sissy Spacek "S/T" CD
In 1999 Sissy Spacek made their first recordings as a conventional blur/grindcore duo consisting of Corydon Ronnau (vocals) and John Wiese (bass and drum machine). Shortly after, the band entered a recycling period in which Wiese produced a number of albums and eps, the first of which was this s/t CD (originally released on Helicopter), transforming their original source material into hardcore musique concrete. Listed in Studio Voice's "New No Wave 200" and declared a new genre by Koji Tano, the consensus was simply stated: "not for the faint of heart." Long unavailable, PACrec is pleased to reissue this classic recording.

Heavy rhythmic manipulations, guitar skrees, haunted vocals, drones and burly noise all processed and mixed in a foul pit of hate.

Scenic Railroads "Airports & Apartments, Volume One" CDr
Dropping the in-joke titles for a change, Scenic Railroads present some live documentation capturing tracks from 2005 actually recorded during a layover at Washington Dulles airport and in the dining room of the then soon-to-be-evacuated Shiflet residence. The first weekend of April, 2005: Pope John Paul II was pushing out his last slow breaths. Stuck in a seemingly-endless layover in Washington DC, there seemed to be no escape from the airport TVs blaring CNN's over-the-top reporting. The only options were headphones & noise. Mid-July, 2005: The last performance before the group was put on "contintental separation" hiatus. Recorded in the almost completely empty apartment 12 hours before the keys were turned over & 167 E. Tulane ceased to be grounds of operation. CDR edition of 100 with covers made using various red & pink Japanese papers/prints.

Sky Burial "S/T" CDr
SKY BURIAL is a project from Massachusetts' Michael Page, more well known for his main endeavor FIRE IN THE HEAD. His work as SKY BURIAL takes a more droning and cyclic approach, an angelic avalanche of shifting tones, drones and rythms. Reminiscent of SKULLFLOWER or VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA, but staking a claim all it's own. Six tracks and 46 minutes, this is a silkscreened cdr in a silkscreened, hand-sewn heavy canvas pouch, strictly limited to 150 copies. Highly Recommended!

Still "Remains" CD
Former Dälek Turntablist, Still (Hsi-Chang Lin) goes solo and unleashes a dark ambient masterpiece that borders on sonic terrorism. Created using only Technics 1200's and an array of effects pedals, Still's REMAINS is not a "turntablist" record in the traditional sense. Drawing from (and adding to) the history of alternative turntable use, REMAINS is an ambient record whose textures at times run side by side with the work of PHILLIP JECK or APHEX TWIN. Two laborious years were put into the 35 minutes that comprise the album. Each track was painstakingly mapped out and played live in the studio. Opening with aggressive noise and evolving into delicate ambience, REMAINS supersedes the preconceived range of the turntable, infusing emotion into an otherwise inhuman instrument.

Strotter Inst. "Anna Anna" 7"
Using five, old manipulated Lenco turntables and various cut or scotched records and found objects, Switzerland's Strotter Inst. (aka Christoph Hess) creates polymorph sound and rhythm structures. The tracks on "Anna/Anna" are more atmospheric than past works and at times resemble field recordings of "lurching" frogs. The listener is met with a single black 7" record(with no labels) in a clear sleeve. Once the record has been removed, the artwork and liner notes(which double as a map to instruct the listener on how to play the record) are revealed and can only be read though the clear sleeve. The tracks (two per side) play inside out and outside in ending in the center of the record in the same locked groove.

"Born in Switzerland, now based in Berlin, Joke Lanz (aka Sudden Infant) is one of the most prolific and profound artists working in the border zones where performance and body art meet improvisation and Noise. In his Sudden Infant guise, Lanz creates a unique blend of physical sound poetry and epileptic noise bursts, using contact microphones, loops, tapes, etc. The result is an extreme form of musique concrète that juxtaposes spasmodic gibbering with a battery of disorienting electronics." - The Wire"

Sutcliffe Jugend "The Fall of Nature" CD
the fall of nature is a epic, grandiose drone piece almost one hour of pure electronics that echoes the masters of the form. the album grows in intensity throughout the recording making for an unexpected release. there are many sides of darkness and many ways to express it. the fall of nature is the balance of sound, in a listenable format. the initial feeling is that of an almost holy, heavenly sound, the skies opening in tribute to the nature which is falling. yet fans of classic sj will be plenty pleased at the psychotically manic conclusion that will not disappoint any fans of pe terror. this music takes aim at several nerve centers at once. this is not just noise, drone or pe but something new that mixes various elements of each together for the first time. co release with groundfault recordings. - Hopspital Productions

Sutcliffe Jugend "This is the Truth" CD
Ground Fault Recordings and Hospital Producitons would like to announce the upcoming release of "This Is The Truth", the first Sutcliffe Jugend studio album in eight years. "This Is The Truth" quite possibly stands as one of the most original and perfectly balanced noise compositions of the last 10 years. It references and uses classic Sutcliffe Jugend of old while bringing in an entirely unique and fresh element one does not hear in noise. This album is a brilliant blend of foreboding tension, and anxiety while using the most lively, disturbing, and textual elements of noise. All of which are brought together with the phenomenal detail and balance of an accomplished electronic composer. Songs that you think will explode leave you hanging with tension, while others erupt with violence out of nowhere. It's an absolutely brilliant album that was worth the wait.

V/A Sweetness Will Overcome CD
Here it is: the first Segerhuva compilation, a massive 74-minute budget priced CD with a 20-page booklet in jewelcase. The CD is filled from beginning to end with a strong and exciting line-up of both well known and newer groups, mainly from Sweden, but also with contributions from Finland and Japan. We are thrilled to be able to present a solid mix of sounds, from the most punishing ultra-harsh electronics, via the primitively thuggish all the way to the cocktail-sipping arty. Yes, we have room for all -- please join the party. "Sweetness Will Overcome" features a wide range of artists making it a diverse and interesting affair. Our tribute to a stagnating but in a strange sense healthy scene! Without further preaching: all tracks are new and exclusively recorded for this compilation, all served with pleasure and pain. Contributing artists: Sewer Election, Koeff, Skin Area, Mnem, Jarl, Moljebka Pvlse, Institut, Government Alpha, Sharon's Last Party, Treriksrøset, IRM, Ochu, Martin Bladh, Irgun Z'wai Leumi, Barrikad and Blod.

The New Blockaders / Thurston Moore / Jim O'Rourke "The Voloptulist" CD
An unbelievable line-up on this one, UK noise icons The New Blockaders team up with erstwhile Sonic Youth bandmates, Thurston Moore and Jim O'Rourke with more than a little help from the reliably jaw-dropping Chris Corsano. The disc is divided into two pieces, the first being the collaboration with Thurston, which turns out to be a particularly obscure drone piece, constituted from hissing feedback tones, tape crackle and some sort of chaotic, mechanical sound sources. The piece evolves infinitesimally over the course of its fourteen minutes, rendering an uncompromising, though highly textured vision of analogue sound sculpting. The other, shorter piece '840 Seconds Over' continues in its predecessor's campaign of high frequency feedback manipulations this time with the addition of some caterwhauling noise oscillator free jazz and typically virtuosic improv drumming from Corsano. It's a real force to be reckoned with, and the crispness of Corsano's kit works perfectly against the hiss and fizz from the tape-heavy, droning elements. It's all over rather too soon (the whole thing clocks in at just over twenty-one minutes), but you can hardly expect anyone to keep up these levels of intensity for prolonged periods, can you? Superb, top-flight noise.

The New Blockaders + Thurston Moore "The Voloptulist" LP
Originally released as a limited CD by Hospital Productions in 2005. This is the equally limited LP version with variant artwork. TNB is arguably the most notorious and interesting proponent of ground zero UK noise/industrial history. A mysterious and oddly evocative practitioner of abstract noise purpose TNB has released some of the most consistently challenging recordings of the genre. What we have here is JIM O’ROURKE on one side and THURSTON MOORE on the other taking TNB “music” and collaborating with it in distinctly different ways: O’Rourke utilizing the free-life percussion power of CHRIS CORSANO and Moore employing the spirit-index of shortwave.

The Rita + Wilt "Werewolf in the Black Space" CD
This tantalising meeting of the minds first saw light in two ridiculously tiny cassette editions on Wilt's own ORCO label. This CD reissue maintains the roughly-sawn quality of the original, adds a lengthy new track, and replaces the artwork with some sexy, bloodied ladies for your entertainment. With such disparate takes on their craft, it's no surprise this CD finds both Wilt and The Rita dragging each other's imposing form into new areas; approached either as a re-imagining and re-contextualising of The Rita, or a brutish noise immersion for Wilt, 'Werewolf In The Black Space' surpasses any obvious confrontation for six moody, bloody, invasive and violent tracks of inspired texturising and midnight stalk which will appeal to those interested in either project's output. 6 panel cover booklet and traycard. Edition of 500 copies.

The Skull Defects "The Drone Drug" CD
First there was Skkull then there was The Drone Drug. Continuing on the same path, the sound of The Drone Drug is of a similar relentless minimalistic nature as its predesessor. This could be seen as the electronic backbone to last years amazing Blood Spirits & Drums Are Singing (Conspiracy Records), creating a heavy beast with the most basic and stripped-down use of variations in drones and frequencies instead of guitars and percussion. Monotonous motor humming via drugged-out machinery and assaults of feedback attacking with a strong feel of claustrophobia.
Compared to Skkull, The Drone Drug evolves more around a grim and abrasive sound, constantly toying with lo-fi aesthetics and a rough industrial edge. The atmosphere created is thick and black, bringing up visions of a dystopian society trembling on the edge of the world. Spreading the disease in a world slowly dying, The Drone Drug is poison and affect you it will.
On this recording, The Skull Defekts is Joachim Nordwall and Henrik Rylander. 4 tracks cut by an unsharpened razor. Total playtime of 52 minutes. 4-panel digipack with artwork by Daniel Fagerström.

Thomas Ankersmit/Jim O'Rourke 12"
Side one features "Weerzin" by Thomas Ankersmit, composed & recorded in 2004 (computer, saxophone, Serge & EMS Synthesizer). Side two composed & recorded by Jim O'Rourke in 1992 (oscillators & guitars). Edition of 750 copies. Cover photo by Alexandra Leykauf.

"Very glad that Jim O'Rourke has fallen out of his dry-slump there and has unearthed a few very nice tape pieces from the early 90's, which he's now farming out to various labels for LPs & splits and things... personally, my all-time favorite Jim pieces are from around this time (see: Disengage, Young Persons' Guide To Drowning, The Ground Below Above Our Heads, etc.) Thomas Ankersmit's side is pretty damn impressive to boot; a wash of Serge & EMS synth freakout layers with saxophone and computer processing." - Frans De Waard, Vital.

Vertonen "Facing Leinth" CDr
Blake Edwards has been a man behind the scenes for quite some time. His CIP label was putting out Joe Colley discs when most kids were still mispronouncing Merzbow. In fact, CIP and GMBY have been on similar wavelengths for so long I thought it was about time to ask Mr. Edwards to contribute something to the catalog. "Facing Leinth" is one of Vertonen's mellowest outings in quite some time. No turntable abuse, no chains or scrap metal, just pulsating waves and composed noise of the highest order. It's a long ride on a dark train to thevery end of the line. Fans of his Ground Fault disc "The Ocean is Gone..." will definitely enjoy this. CDR edition of 100 with covers made using various black & purple Japanese papers/prints.

W.C. claims to record his works in various bedrooms; can only imagine how the colours must melt and the walls shake around him in resonance to his psychedelic madness. the carson man continues to shake minds and stir souls. edition of 88 hand-numbered copies.

Wi77!N6 "Brotherhood of the Backwards Handshake" CD
The new CD release from the visionary and sorely under-documented late 90's duo Wi77!N6 (that’s “Willing,” kids), is out now in an edition of 300.
Recorded and shelved in Bushwick, Brooklyn back in 2000 by drummer/pounder/scraper/whistler Fritz Welch and completely unprepared guitarist Ian Christe when any number of Bushwick denizens of today’s (or was it yesterday’s?) New No Fun America were still taking driving lessons, Brotherhood of the Backwards Handshake is like a time capsule of detuned, metal-tinged guitar, guileless synth blurts, splattering faux gamelan percussion, and disembodied voices. At the very least, it certainly points the way to Welch’s more layered work with Peeesseye. But it's really just about the best record Evolving Ear has ever put out, and it comes in a vomit inducing glossy Digipak covered in Fritz Welch's artwork and really rather tasteless design by Ian Christe.

Wolf Eyes / Sickness "There is a Part of Me That You Will Never Know" LP
The first ever collaboration between noise institutions Wolf Eyes and Sickness makes its way into your inner ear via Dominick Fernow's always terrifying Hospital productions. As tends to be the case with so many of the American noise scene's primary movers and shakers, this LP manages to successfully juggle all-out howling noise assaults with more restrained, cloudy atmospherics. Between them, Mike Connelly John Olson, Nate Young and Chris Goudreau make a surprisingly focussed, uncluttered murmur through the early stages of 'A Diet Of Speed And Beer', the first side droning and screeching into life with some low pressure sandblasting tactics, interspersed with the odd pop and thud here and there, presumably heralding the switching on and off of effects units. It has to be said though: it's only when the players crank their output to maxed-out levels that the sheer brilliance of the quartet reveals itself - particularly on B-side '47 Polaroids' when part way through a stamping rhythm imposes itself upon the otherwise chaotic structure, recalling the headache beats strewn across Human Animal. Awesome.

Wolf Eyes with John Wiese "Equinox" CD
Equinox is the fourth collaboration between Wolf Eyes and John Wiese. Following several Olson-produced releases on his American Tapes label, Equinox is the first collaborative album produced by Wiese and features the line-up of Aaron Dilloway, John Olson, Nate Young and John Wiese. "After jamming onstage early in this period at the Casbah in San Diego and using the material to put out the “Live" 7" - this CD further pushes the electronic confusion hurricane into truly brain fungus clawing vine sound territory. Wiese's horror/libarian approach to noise sculpture and his surgical skillz at scattering sound is fully matched and paired with the lurking, sweating Anti-Intelligence live Wolf Bombast. Including totally strange piece with the crew watching fireworks in Echo Park and chuckling it up with brews in hand after a three hour drive from homeland Michigan. Hopefully your CD player in car will spit this disgusting sound platter black at you to stuff inside a lacquered decay piece of road killed raspberry splatter babies." - John Olson Released in conjunction with their East Coast and Midwest tour for September & October 2006.

Yellow Swans with John Wiese "Portable Dunes" CD
This collaboration between psychedelic slurry merchants Yellow Swans and big noise on the big noise scene, John Wiese, begins very much as you'd expect, with a towering hunk of din and colourful mid-fi abrasion. Once 'That's A Lot To Ask' has finished scraping out your ears, 'Evicted CD-R' kicks in with high frequency sine wave tones and near-silence, slowly building up a dark, cloudy atmosphere before plunging headlong into what sounds like an orchestra tuning up in a very big cave, amplified to ridiculous extents. 'Disco Girlfriend' is more consistently abstract, establishing a flaked-out, caustic ambience before 'Happy New Year' mellows out with some airy chimes and only the very slightest, hovering drifts of static. Finally, 'Lost In The Blood' embarks upon a quietly droning journey that finishes with an ominous foghorn conclusion, floating off into the distance.

Yellow Swans "Psychic Secession" CD

Thier other record was “Bringing The Neon War Home” on narnack Although the band has countless releases documenting their live aktions, “Psychic Secession” is a work of uncomprimising vison, weaving together all sides of this duo’s 20-sided die. Moments of quiet hum but up against crunchy speaker burners to make this record essential listening.
